The Web Design Shopping Cart

“Wow, 52% of shopping carts were abandoned on the web last year,” says Michael Moshkovich from MagazinePromotion.com (an industry leader in magazine subscriptions on the Web).

Finding a reason for such high abandonment rates, lead me to an investigative survey of blogs and web postings from different forums. What I am about to present is a result of countless hours of research.

This is a substantially difficult problem for all online storeowners and the affiliate forums are filled with questions on how to reduce abandonment rates. I’ve found that there is no definite quick fix to this vital issue but there is a way to improve it. The resolution is to incorporate a user friendly web design with a flexible software shopping cart.

Ok now you might be scratching your head wondering what I am talking about – that doesn’t even make any sense? Before we get ahead of ourselves let me explain how shopping cart software works by giving you a real-world example.

A few months ago, a long time ecommerce client of WebCart called our tech support team, and expressed a frustration with an issue he was having. He went on to explain that 60% of his customers would abandon their shopping cart, and wanted to know if we had any advice on what he could do to change his shopping cart around to improve his sales conversions.

He said “I need a web design software shopping cart solution.” When the tech support staff informed me of that quote I was confused at first, but then I finally understood what it was he was saying. Web Design software that can integrate easily with online shopping carts. Let me explain what I mean.

Most eCommerce shopping cart software allows web designers to customize the primary and product pages, but very few; if any allow you to customize the design of the checkout page or more importantly the cart contents page – where you get to see what is in your cart and make adjustments.

It’s the checkout page and the view cart contents pages that get abandoned the majority of the time; hence it’s important to pay close attention to color, layout and design within the checkout process.

WebCart is working to introduce an enhancement to its current state-of-the-art web site management platform. This feature will be known as the “web design software shopping cart”. Of course, the name of the feature doesn’t make any sense from the perspective of the English language but from the perspective of what the user of an ecommerce solution needs, the name says it all because it tells you immediately what it does. If there ever were a shopping cart solution that was web design friendly, WebCart will continue to be the industry leader in bridging web designers with online storefronts and ecommerce platforms.
